Scars caused by the exceptional
weather conditions at the end of last year were still in evidence on the course but much had been done to minimise the impact on players. The fairways and greens were well presented and residual damage was confined mainly to bunkers, some of which were unplayable and designated “Ground Under Repair” in order that free relief could be taken.
The course is not long, but it is technically challenging and many players struggled to master the steeply elevated and sloping greens, especially those with creative pin placements.
The Jyske Bank Trophy was won by
Nicky Sanchez with 38 Stableford points, the only score of the day better than par. Nicky also won two green fees on the San Roque Club Old course and greatly moved himself up the Jyske Bank order of merit.
Other prizes were won as follows:
The best performance on all the par 3 holes was Dermot Keelan with a gross score of 1 over par. The best team pairing were Nicky Sanchez and his brother Joe with a combined score of 72 points.
The longest drive trophy was won by Mark Henderson who also features in the nearest the pin prize list below.
The best senior prize went to Roger Griffiths with a score of 34 points making the first of his three visits to the podium. Roger also won the best gross trophy for which every hole must be scored. Roger had a round of 83 beating Chris Warren and Matthew Charlesworth on handicap, although Matthew had some compensation by appearing in the Category prizes below.
Our handicap category prizes were won as follows:
Category 1 (handicaps 0 to 12):
Matthew Charlesworth was the runner up on handicap with a score of 32 points. Capping a very successful day, Roger Griffiths was the winner with a score of 34 points.
Category 2 (handicaps 13 to 22):
the runner up was Daniel Lomax with 32 points. The winner was Joe Sanchez with a score of 34 points.
Category 3 (handicap 23 and above):
Peter Yeoman was runner up with 26 points having been beaten to the winner’s spot by Matthew Robinson with a score of 33 points.
Nearest the pin winners were:
Stuart Ferguson, David Macgregor, Mark Henderson and Anders Østergaard. Nearest to the pin in 2 on a par 4 was Daniel Lomax and nearest to the pin in 3 on a par 5 was Louis Calvente.
The Sponsor was well represented at the event and prizes were presented by The Jyske Bank Senior Relationship Manager Carsten Hjort Hansen. The prize giving was followed by a card draw for a litre bottle of Johnnie Walker whiskey, followed by two invitations to play golf on the San Roque Club Old and two invitations to lunch at the Star Bar in Gibraltar courtesy of Jyske Bank. All players were also cordially invited to the Bank’s branch in Gibraltar for drinks and Danish Hot Dogs.
Thank you to everyone who supported this event and congratulations to the prize winners. The new season is well on its way now and there will be many more opportunities to enjoy a great day out on different golf courses and work your way into the Med Golf Masters in August 2017.
